In his 2007 State of the Union address, President Bush called for electronic health records for most Americans by 2014. Predictably, his remarks generated enthusiasm from supporters and skepticism from detractors, but everyone seemed to agree that as there were no set standards in place for EHR, early purchasers risked buying systems unable to meet future needs.
Following the President's announcement, the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA), the Health Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) and the National Alliance for Health Information Technology (Alliance) teamed to gather funding and support. Shortly after, the three associations merged to form the Certification Commission for Healthcare Information Technology (CCHIT). An independent, non-profit organization, CCHIT is devoted to assist physicians in their search for an EHR system.
Dedicated to promoting the adoption of robust, interoperable health information technology, CCHIT developed a credible product certification program. In 2005, it was awarded a contract by the US Department of Health and Human Services to develop, create prototypes for and evaluate the certification criteria and inspection process for EHRs and the networks in which they interoperate. One year later, Health and Human Services secretary, Mike Leavitt, invited CCHIT to join him in announcing the first CCHIT Certified EHR products.
