Are Electronic Claims Affecting Your Payments?

Tuesday, April 28, 2009 by Jennifer Sanders
For those of you who are currently on one of our Medical Insurance Billing Software products, I would like to remind you of a couple of very important things.  As technology changes more and more insurance companies are requiring electronic claims.  Sending electronic claims out of the Bradford Scott Medical Billing Systems is very easy, but requires some responsibility on your part.  It is very important that you don't just send your claims and put them out of your mind.  Working your electronic reports from Emdeon is one of the most important steps to electronic claims.  You should be looking at the following reports:

  • RPT R097- Tells you whether your file was accepted or rejected by Emdeon.
  • RPT 02- Tells you the status of the file, the total claims, and dollar amount of the file.
  • RPT 03- Tells you the total claims, total dollar amount, and how many claims were accepted and rejected.
  • RPT 04- Gives you a list of what patient claims went out in the file and whether they were accepted or rejected.
  • RPT 05- Gives you a list of any claims that were rejected by Emdeon and the reason for the rejection.  These claims need worked and re-billed.
  • RPT 08- Gives you a monthly report of the number of claims you have sent out for the practice and your top 25 rejection reasons.
  • RPT 10- Is a report from the payer on the claims they have received and accepted for processing.
  • RPT 11- Gives you a list of any claims rejected by the payer.  These claims also need worked and re-billed.
  • Payer Reports- These are reports from the payers of the claims they received.  They generally show what was accepted and rejected.

Failure to work your electronic reports will cause you a decrease in claim payments.  Emdeon also offers a product called Claim Tracker that will allow you to view your electronic claim files and any rejections you may have received.  It's a valuable tool in working electronic reports.  If you are interested in signing up for Claim Tracker, please call our office at
317-713-2065.  We would be glad to get you enrolled and on your way to better management of your electronic claims.
